How to make a coupon QR code (with one-time codes)
Updated:
Create a QR code coupon customers get by scanning: a shared code or one-time codes staff mark as used with a PIN, optional email capture and a claims list.
A coupon QR code opens a page on QR Crab with your offer. Customers tap Get my coupon and get a code to show at the till. You can give everyone the same code, or give each person their own one-time code that your staff mark as used with a PIN, so a coupon can't be passed around and used twice.
- Works on every plan; a coupon is always a trackable code (it uses one of your trackable codes).
- One-time codes (like
LUNA-7K2P9X) and staff PIN redemption: Premium and Pro. - Optional email capture, with an unticked consent box.
- Every claim counts toward your monthly responses (25 on Free, 500 on Premium, 5,000 on Pro).
Create a coupon QR code
- Choose Coupon. In the dashboard, click New QR code and pick Coupon under Pages, files & forms.
- Describe the offer. Fill in Offer (for example “10% off your next visit”), and optionally Details, an Image, Expires on (optional) and Terms (optional).
- Pick how the code works. Enter a Coupon code (optional) that everyone uses, or tick Give each person a one-time code (staff mark it as used) and set a 4–8 digit Staff PIN (Premium and Pro).
- Decide whether to collect contact details. Tick Ask for contact details before showing the coupon to ask for an email, plus a name and phone number if you want them.
- Style, create and download. Adjust the design, click Create QR code, then download it and put it on flyers, receipts or your counter.
The guided editor (Try the new editor (beta)) asks for the same fields, split into Content, Look and Finish steps. Trackable codes need a confirmed email address, so check your inbox for the confirmation link first.
Shared code or one-time codes?
| Shared code | One-time codes | |
|---|---|---|
| What customers see | Your Coupon code (optional), e.g. LUNA10, or “Show this screen to staff” if you leave it empty | Their own code, e.g. LUNA-7K2P9X |
| Can be reused or shared | Yes, same code for everyone | No, staff mark each one as used |
| Plans | All plans | Premium and Pro |
One-time codes start with letters from your shared code or the first word of your offer, followed by six random characters. Look-alike characters such as 0/O and 1/I are left out so they are easy to read aloud or type.
How staff mark a coupon as used
With one-time codes, the customer's coupon screen has a section called For staff: mark as used. At the till:
- The customer shows their phone with the coupon.
- A staff member opens For staff: mark as used, types the Staff PIN on the customer's phone and taps Mark as used.
- The screen confirms it. If anyone shows that coupon again, it says Already used with the time it was used.
Keep the PIN private: anyone who knows it can mark coupons as used. After 8 wrong PINs, the form is blocked for 15 minutes. You can change the PIN any time in Edit & design.
You can also mark a claim as redeemed (or undo it) from the dashboard: open the code → Claims → Mark redeemed.
Collecting emails with a coupon
Tick Ask for contact details before showing the coupon and the page asks for an email before showing the code. Ask for their name is on by default and Ask for their phone number is optional. Customers also see an unticked Send me offers by email box; only people who tick it have agreed to marketing emails.
See your claims
In the dashboard, open the coupon → Claims. You'll see the number of claims, how many were redeemed, the Redemption rate and Leads with consent, plus a list of every claim with name, email, phone, consent, code and when it was redeemed. On Premium and Pro, Export CSV downloads the whole list for your spreadsheet or email tool. Scans show up under Stats like any trackable code.
Expiry dates and monthly limits
If you set Expires on (optional), the page shows “Valid until” that date. After the last day has ended in every time zone, the page says This offer has ended and stops giving out coupons.
Claims share a monthly allowance with rating and feedback responses across all your codes. When you reach it, the coupon page shows Not available right now until the next month starts. See QR Crab plans compared: Free, Premium and Pro for details.
Common questions
Can one person claim the coupon again and again?
Each phone gets the same coupon back if it scans again (it shows You already have this coupon.), and one visitor can claim a coupon at most 3 times a day. With one-time codes, each code can be marked as used only once.
What happens if a customer shows a one-time code that was already used?
The coupon screen shows Already used with the date and time it was marked, so staff can see it straight away.
Do I need a paid plan?
The coupon page itself works on every plan, including Free. One-time codes with staff PIN redemption and CSV export of claims need Premium or Pro.
Is the marketing consent box ticked for people?
No. When you collect contact details, the Send me offers by email box is shown unticked, and the claims list shows who ticked it.
What happens to one-time codes if I downgrade to Free?
New claims get your shared Coupon code (optional) instead (or a “show this screen” coupon if you didn't set one). One-time codes that were already given out can still be marked as used.
